GORDON MARKHAM 2012 CLASSES: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

On Mondays we start with Boot Camp Bridge and follow it with Competitive Bidding.

On Thursdays we have Play of the Hand, followed by 2/1 Game Force.

On Tuesdays, a brand new course on 2nd and 4th hand bidding, called Intruder/Advancer Part I, has been developed by Richard Catero and I am pleased to teach it.

Send me an email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) or call me (480-802-8141) if you would like to enroll in any of these courses or if you have any questions.  You can scroll down to learn more about the five courses.

BOOT CAMP BRIDGE

Who might benefit from this course: Any social bridge player or any duplicate player with fewer than 10 master points.  Note, this course is not for true beginners.

What it covers: We teach 2nd and 3rd rounds of bidding after partner opens one of a major or one of a minor.  When partner opens 1 Notrump we teach the modern conventions of Stayman and Jacoby Transfers.  We also teach strong 2 Club openings and the responses.

When: Five weeks, Mondays, Jan. 9th to Feb. 6th, from 9 – 11:15 AM

Where: Greenbriar Room, Oakwood Country Club

Cost: $50, plus $14 for the two texts

COMPETITIVE BIDDING

Who might benefit from this course: This course follows Boot Camp Bridge.  If you have not taken Boot Camp, then it is for people who have played social bridge for many years or who are novice duplicate players.

What it covers: We start with Weak Two Openings and the responses, stressing “continuing the preempt”.  We discuss overcalls and doubles after your opponent opens the bidding.  We develop the bidding structure for the third chair and fourth chair after interference.  We teach the fourth most important convention, the Negative Double.

When: Six weeks, Mondays, Feb. 13th to Mar. 19th, from 9 – 11:15 AM

Where: Greenbriar Room, Oakwood Country Club

Cost: $60, plus $7 for the text

PLAY OF THE HAND

Who might benefit from this course: Anyone who has not taken this course.  Remember, twenty-five percent of the time you are the Declarer.

What it covers: The main theme is how to plan your play.  We move from your plan to learn how to make tricks through promotion, length and finesses.  We discuss several types of finesses.  We show how to ruff in dummy and how to set up cross-ruffs.  We finally discuss preserving and using entries and trump management.

When: Five weeks, Thursdays, Jan. 12th to Feb. 9th, from 9 – 11:15 AM

Where: Greenbriar Room, Oakwood Country Club

Cost: $50, plus $11 for the text

2/1 GAME FORCE

Who might benefit from this course: Duplicate bridge players who are ready to learn this modern approach to bidding.  Note, it’s best to come with a partner with whom you can practice but this is not required as you may want to learn 2/1 in order to understand your opponents’ bidding

What it covers: We start with the philosophy of why one should use 2/1 Game Force.  The main reasons are to achieve better part score contracts and to improve your slam bidding.  We teach 1 No Trump Forcing which helps achieve better part score contracts.  We teach 2/1 Game Force auctions which makes game bidding easier while saving bidding room to explore the possibility of slams.  For slam bidding we teach how to bid your controls to set the stage for successful use of Blackwood.

When: Five weeks, Thursdays, Feb. 16th to Mar. 15th, from 9 – 11:15 AM

Where: Greenbriar Room, Oakwood Country Club

Cost: $50, plus $11 for the text

INTRUDER/ADVANCER, Part I

Who might benefit from this course: Any serious bridge student.  There will be great discussions of hand evaluations and how this relates to tricks.  Remember, bridge is a trick taking game.

What it covers: What you should hold to make a one suited overcall/intrusion.  This will include guidelines for distribution, quick tricks and the important concept, (good) high card points.  We proceed to the Advancer’s side and present guidelines for raises and for choosing the correct level to raise.  This is accomplished by successfully determining the number of tricks the Advancer can contribute to the partnership.  If the Advancer does not have trump support we present guidelines to bid a new suit or bid some level of notrump.  The Advancer’s bidding structure is fully developed, regardless of the bid the opener’s partner makes.  Next we present guidelines for the second round bids by both the Intruder and Advancer.  Using this structure you will correctly bid more games, even though the opponents open the bidding.

When: Six weeks, Jan. 10th to Feb. 14th, from 9 – 11:15 AM

Where: Bradford Room, Oakwood Country Club

Cost: $60, plus $10 for the material
